November 2007

Sunday Services - 10:00 a.m.

Nov. 4:    Profile of a Patriot     Rev. Kathleen A. Green
What is a patriot?  What does a patriot look and act like?  As Veteran’s Day approaches, it seems appropriate that we would consider this topic and how, as a welcoming faith community, we might expand our views on the idea of patriotism.  Ed Henry will provide our music.
PLEASE DON’T FORGET THAT DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS THIS WEEKEND.

Nov. 11:   The Interdependent Web of Heroes   Rev. Don Stouder
Rev. Don, a former SUUF Affiliate Minister, will be joining us to mark the National Donor Sabbath.  He has been a chaplain in the organ donation field for the past year, and is excited to  return to Summit on this special day.  Sharing the stories of the heroes who donate their organs and those behind the scenes, Don hopes to bring new meaning to our Seventh Principle, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

Nov. 18:     The Welcome Table         Rev. Kathleen A. Green
This is our intergenerational Thanksgiving service.  Rev. Kathleen and our DRE, Connie Henry, look forward to spending this Sunday morning with our congregation of all ages.  We are so fortunate to have these opportunities to be together to celebrate our community.  Our choir will be singing at this service and we will have a special bread-breaking ceremony.  Please bring your friends and family for this pre-Thanksgiving gathering.

Nov. 25:      My Soul Belongs to the South          Rev. Kathleen A. Green
My Soul Belongs to the South is an original chancel drama based on the life experiences of Rev. Kathleen, Gwen Baldwin, and Frank Placone-Willey.  The small cast of characters will warm your hearts like a thick slice of pecan pie.  This will be unlike any service you’ve attended at Summit in the past.  While a few of our traditional service elements will be present, others will not.  Y’all won’t want to miss this touching chancel drama!  The Close Enough Band will be performing.

Solar Energy Plan for Summit
Norm Dessel, October 2007
Dear Member of Summit UU Fellowship,
The Summit UU Fellowship has accepted a bid by Home Energy Systems, Inc. of San Diego to install a solar photovoltaic (PV) roof-mounted electric plant that will generate electric power for the Summit office complex. The system is sized to produce 100% of the electric energy needed to run the office complex, which used approximately 68% of the total energy at Summit during the summer of 2007.  It will not affect the rest of the facility.  The  (PV) plant will save the Fellowship about $6,600 in the first five years, assuming that electric unit cost remains the same. It is guaranteed for 30 or more years, will not affect the property assessment, and over thirty years it will avoid the injection of 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the lower atmosphere per year.
The plant will cost approximately $30,000, however, the state of California is offering a substantial credit towards the purchase.  We are in the process of looking for funding the rest of the amount, through grants and donations.  There is a no penalty clause for canceling the contract, should we not raise the funds by December of 2008.
In 20 years, we shall have saved around $29,000 in 2007 dollars and avoided rate increases at SDG&E.  In addition, we will be supporting Summit's "green" approach by decreasing carbon dioxide emissions and other air pollutants for this facility.  So we will both be saving money and living up to our commitment to a sustainable environment.

SUNDAY SOCIAL TIME
The Board would like to encourage everyone to get to know our visitors and new members during the Sunday social time, as well as catch up with each other.  For many of us this is a time to connect with our Summit Family and really find out how one another are doing.  This is also our chance to reach out and show the larger community who we are at Summit.
Please schedule any meetings either before services or after 11:30 so we have plenty of time to visit with one another.
*Boutique Items are still being accepted up to noon on Nov. 8. Family heirlooms, treasures, and like new items (no clothes or books).  Please label “Boutique” and drop them at the office in the closet to the right of Connie’s office.
Congratulations to Elinor Simmonds and her son, who lives in Thailand, at the birth of healthy twin boys last month!  All are doing well.

We are saddened to let the friends of Bob Tjepkema know that he passed away on Sat., Oct. 20.  Please contact Rod Orth with inquiries regarding Bob.

Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by the fires in many ways, great and small.

Explore Becoming a Member of Summit
Have you been visiting Summit and feel ready to explore the possibility of joining our membership? Come to our fall Summit Orientation, on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9:30-noon, and on Sunday, Nov. 18, from 11:30-1:30.  Childcare will be provided on both days, as well as a light breakfast on Sat. and lunch on Sun. Discussions will address our spiritual journeys and the history of Unitarian Universalism, the Summit culture and programs, as well as the rewards, responsibilities & requirements of membership. Our minister, Rev. Kathleen Green will facilitate the sessions, with other Summit leaders participating throughout.  By the end of the orientation on Sunday, you'll have a good sense of what Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is all about, and whether or not this is the place you want to call your spiritual home.
Those who decide to become members will be invited to attend a New Member Reception with our Board of Directors on Thursday, Nov. 29, and will be formally welcomed into our membership during the December 2 worship service. Call 619-562-0833 or email the office at
summitunitarian@sbcglobal.net to reserve your space for the orientation sessions.  Feel free to contact Membership chairpersons Joan Chan and Elaine Harper, or Rev. Kathleen, with any questions. Hope to have you with us!

Spotlight

(This is a new feature of our newsletter that puts the spotlight on one particular Summit committee or program.)
This month’s spotlight shines on our
Committee on Ministry.
Our Mission Statement is as follows:
The Committee on Ministry exists to nurture, guard and further right relationships among the ministries of Summit by fostering an environment of mutual respect, open communication and trust within the congregation as a whole.
What is meant by ‘ministries’, you might ask?  Summit conceives its programs as ministries to the congregation and the surrounding community.  The ministries at Summit are mutually shared between the ordained Minister and the laity.  Our pastoral presence, our religious education, and our social action are all grounded in the ministries we give and receive from one another.
The responsibilities of the Committee on Ministry lie in two areas:  ministerial support and as

Many of you know that it is fine to occasionally pop into the office and make personal copies on the copier (for $.03 per copy).  While I am on the job I am the fellowship’s resource as are the computers.  Please remember that I cannot make personal copies or allow use of my computer. Thank you all for understanding.    ~ Linda Peck

As I write this, the air is still thick with smoke and evacuations are changing by the hour.  While the devastation and scope of impact is overwhelming, I am heartened by the care and concern being shown by Summit members for one another and those being affected throughout our community.
Rex Graham quickly stepped in and helped Elinor Simmonds answer phones on Monday and organized a group of homes available for evacuees.  Pat Bryning, Viraj Ward, Rex Graham, Toni Rogers, myself and Rev. Kathleen called every member of Summit to check on their safety and needs.  Gwen and Gary Baldwin, with the Social Action Committee purchased blankets and supplies for the Santee HS evacuation center and collected toothbrushes, toothpaste and baby supplies for the Qualcomm evacuation center.  Many members and friends of Summit have gone out of their way to contact one another and make sure all needs are met.  Thank you to all who are helping one another and those suffering throughout San Diego this week.
While it will be over by the time this newsletter is received, I am looking forward to visiting with many of you over the impromptu potluck on Wednesday.  It will be good to touch base in the midst of this crisis.  We are truly a loving and beloved community!
Hopefully by now, everyone is back in his/her home and life is returning to normal.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the November 10th Auction.  It will be a wonderful time to get together again and celebrate our beloved community, while raising funds for its support.  This year, it will have special significance.  My best wishes to all of you and your families.

Religious Exploration for Children and Youth
Please mark your calendars for our annual children’s holiday performance on Sunday, December 9! We will soon be hard at work preparing a Christmas pageant called “Bathrobes, Tinsel and Tinfoil Wings.” Rehearsals will be before the service on five Sunday mornings (November 4 through December 2) from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. plus two Saturdays (December 1 and 9). MC Patton, whose help was so greatly appreciated with last year’s play, has agreed to be our Director. Parents, please encourage your children’s involvement. In years past, even the most reluctant performers have tended to have a worthwhile and memorable experience.
Something for everyone: movie opportunities for parents and kids: (Learn more in the Adult Religious Education article.) As adults watch and discuss a movie in Summit’s salon, children (with supervision) will watch a movie of their own in the Religious Education area. This will happen on three consecutive Fridays: November 16, 23 and 30, from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.
Check out the new recycling exchange board on the hallway wall between R.E. and the greeting room. Geehaw whimmy diddle? Bicycle built for two? Quilting frame? You name it. Write what goods you would like to offer (along with your contact information) on the slip provided and post it on the board along with a suggested donation that can be put in the attached container. If there’s something you’re looking for, post that along with your contact info. Individuals contact each other and make the switch. (Please don’t bring the items in to Summit – just their descriptions on the recycling board!) Questions? Speak with Shelley Lekven at coffee time.
MANY THANKS to our October R.E. volunteers: Mary Ellen Shu, Pat Gille, Ed Henry, Stacey Sasaki, Jack Slagle, Diane Slagle, Mark Wheeler, Teresa Palombo, Mahrya Hafner, Ann Prather, Patti Quint, Paul Palombo, Alan McQuaide, Elizabeth Braymen, Erica Braymen, Mary Braunwarth, Chris Steussy, Misha Chapman, Russ Chapman, Lulu Lacono, Katy Orr, Laurel Bernstein, Norma Pizarro and Tyra Myles.

Summit’s Social Action Reaches Out to East County – In what ways has the Social Action Committee involved itself into East County in the past year?
Santee - We have two representatives to the Santee Collaborative, a group with a mission to “promote a healthier, proactive community that builds resilient children and families. “ Through this association, Summit has donated $1065 to fund Students Together Against Alcohol ‘N Drugs (designed to develop student leadership in the prevention of drug, tobacco and alcohol use among teens) and over $400 to Challenge Day (a program offered to two Santee schools promoting tolerance and sensitivity.) In addition, an East County chapter of Amnesty International has been established and meets monthly at Summit. Also, Summit has applied to be a polling station in our Santee community.
East County - Summit has continued to assist East County’s Crisis House in its efforts to uplift individuals and families in dire need by providing hygiene packs for the homeless, Christmas gifts to an “adopted” family, canned goods for a food bank, baby items, household goods for a domestic violence shelter and over $600 to Crisis House’s general fund. We continue to support the Interfaith Shelter Network with other East County churches to house the homeless by providing food and chaperones. There are plans to expand Summit’s participation in this program.
The Social Action Committee continues to look for ways to be involved in our new community and Summit is making its presence known in East County. This is all possible because of YOUR generosity. Thank you!
San Diego AIDS Walk – Summit walked our talk again at AIDS Walk San Diego! We had 15 Summitarians with the Cluster team (Unitarian Universalists of San Diego County), a total of 23 walkers, and collected $1580 out of a team total of $2588 in donations! One of Summit’s teenage members, Julia Shu, worked as a volunteer staffer for this event. Thanks to all who walked and all who donated to help those living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego.
How can you help Summit’s efforts in social action?
Financial:
Guest at Your Table: Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC).  November 18th, with UU congregations throughout the United States, UUSC Guest at Your Table boxes will be distributed to congregation households.  Through the third Sunday in January, these boxes can be used to collect donations to support UUSC. From its establishment in 1940, the UUSC “…envisions a world free from oppression and injustice, where all can realize their full human rights” and is involved in four main areas: advancing economic justice; defending civil liberties and access to democratic processes; promoting environmental justice; and, protecting rights in humanitarian crises.” (P.S. This is a great time for parents to talk to their children about the importance of helping others.)
Heifer Project Involves Summit’s Children –  As part of our “Helping Others Across Our Borders” program, funds will be collected on November 18 to support Heifer International. The goal of every Heifer project is sustainability – helping people feed themselves. The children of Summit will have an opportunity to vote as to what will be  “purchased” for a family in need.  They can choose such things as sheep, goats, chicks, trees or even bees. The family learns how to use their gift and then passes on their gift to others in their community. Go to
http://www.heifer.org/ for more information.
Fair Trade Coffee will be on sale along with dark organic chocolate bars with almonds on November 11th. Our table is directly across from where you pick up your cup of coffee or tea. Questions? Contact Lynne Slaughter.
People Power:
The next meeting of Amnesty International is on Monday, November 26th at 7:00 pm. Contact Viraj Ward if you have further questions.

Membership News
To all members and friends: it is important that our data base information files be kept up to date. In the past we have instances of members’ health problems, disasters such as fires at Potrero in which we have had difficulty contacting relatives due to lack of information on hand. During the next few weeks, until December 12, members of the Membership Committee including Neal Biggart, Joan Chan, Gwen Curry, Guenter Esslinger, Elaine Harper, Jeanne Hayes, Roberta Osuyos, Patti Robison Heyer and Pat Summers will be in contact with each and every one of you by person or phone to complete our Summit files. Many of you have completed forms in the past, but it is very important to verify your current address and emergency contact numbers. Information concerning your interests, skills and talents will be most valuable to share within our community. You are assured that the above information will only be used for Summit Fellowship’s purposes and will not be shared with the outside community.
The next New Member Ceremony will take place during Sunday services on December 2nd following the two orientations sessions scheduled for November 17th and 18th: We hope you will make a special effort to participate and greet our newest members.

Board Meeting– Oct. 19, 2007
The Board approved the Minutes of the Congregational Meeting of September 23rd and the Board Meeting of September 20, 2007.
Rev. Kathleen Green recognized the fourteen members who had donated tickets for the Guitar Concert held 10/13/07.  This event netted $1,300 for the church.  She also announced that we are in negotiations to rent the Salon for yoga classes, and that the Membership Committee is currently compiling a list of member talents and interests for future reference.
Board President Debbie Wingard reported that she is contacting members about serving on a Website Redesign Committee, that the Facilities Committee is preparing a list of recommendations for building improvements and a timeline for implementation, and that a contract has been signed for installation of a Solar Energy System, contingent upon obtaining funding (i.e. grant or donation).
Linda Peck was congratulated and recognized for her five (5) years of service to our church as Administrator.
The recent Hospitality Workshop by Rev. Kathleen was attended by sixteen (16) persons who made excellent suggestions, which will be implemented ASAP.  These improvements include:  1) additional signage around and in buildings, 2) designated visitor parking, 3) office hours with Rev. Kathleen every second Sunday from 11:30 to noon to answer visitor’s questions, and 4) a board member designated as a Board Host each Sunday morning from 9:30 to noon for the purpose of greeting visitors and new members and conducting a tour of the premises if desired.
Treasurer John McQuaide reviewed our finances and answered questions on how to read the financial documents.

Freethinkers
We will return to a twice a month schedule; one meeting will continue to be held at 7 PM on the first Tuesday of each month, in the Greeting Room/lobby; and the second meeting will be during the daytime.
First Daytime Meeting, Wednesday Nov 14 at 10 AM - Carol Straubinger will provide a 15 minute book review of John McWhorter's bestseller, Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America. A black linguistic professor at Berkeley UC, he provides readers with his explorations of what it means to be black in America today and makes a powerful case for the advancement of true racial equality. His rather conservative ideas could lead to lively discussion following the review.
We will also discuss the time and day for future daytime meetings and opportunities for others to provide topics and/or volunteer to lead them. If you are looking for an interesting daytime activity, this is the time to be a part of shaping these meetings.
Evening meetings: Members will rotate presentations, bringing topics of their own choosing or one someone has suggested. All have agreed we want more time for discussion than we had in the past year. To get things started, several people offered to lead the meetings listed below. Neal Biggart will keep the schedule filled so please contact her if you want to volunteer. Here’s what we have so far:
Nov 6 - Wendell Rawlins will present a selection from the CD of Alan Greenspan’s spectacular new book, The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World. Greenspan tells of his evolution from an average kid to one of the most powerful men in the world as Chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Dec 4 – Carol Rawlins- Apocalypticism. There have been numerous apocalypses in the ancient world
including the presently popular Book of Revelations. They share in common certain features and an apocalyptic world view. 30 minute DVD and discussion.
Jan. 8 - Neal Biggart - Environmental issues (Neal is teaching now in an Orthodox Jewish school and the kids are seeing how important climate and earth care are.)
Feb. 5 - Wendell Rawlins – returning to Alan Greenspan’s book, The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World. We will listen to the Clinton years of his 20 year tour as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. This is a great view of how the Federal Reserve Functions in respect to the Federal Government.
Mar. 4
- Neal Biggart - the evolution of genetics morality (Genetics is her field of study)
Apr. 1 - Mark Wheeler - “The Cultural Genesis of Morality”
