Sept. 2:    Thou Shalt Not Steal    Rev. Kathleen A. Green
On this Labor Day weekend, we will explore what meaning the Hebrew scriptures’ eighth commandment has for us today.  Author Dr. Leonard Felder refers to the ten commandments as the ten challenges we face every day of our lives. Joining our service will be Bet Lawrence from the Interfaith Council on Worker Justice.

Sept. 9:   Out of the Water – an intergenerational service     Rev. Kathleen A. Green
This will be the first service of our new church year and will include a water communion. Please bring a small amount of water that symbolizes your summer journey. This water could be from a special place you ‘traveled’, or your own pool or tap. After the service all of the children will be invited to water various plants with our DRE, Connie Henry.

Sept. 16:   On My Grandparent’s Knee   Service Leader: Gwen Baldwin
A grandparent can play a pivotal role in lighting the path of a child. Gary Baldwin, Lamar Rogers, and Julia Shu will relate their thoughts and experiences either as a grandparent or grandchild. The Close Enough Band will provide the music.

Sept. 23:    The Eyes Have It      Rev. Kathleen A. Green
The vision statement of Summit is clear.  It is how we see ourselves as a spiritual community in East County.  Having had our Ministerial Start-Up gathering a week earlier, today we will explore our vision vs. our expectations while discussing our hopes, dreams, and what we expect from Summit.

Sept. 30:      What Can I Say? Rev. Kathleen A. Green
Whoever said, “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, obviously hasn’t had a good talking to!  Words can be used as weapons that hurt, damage, and destroy.  Yes, language is a powerful tool that often gets in the way of our being with one another and being a viable part of our larger community.  Even in Unitarian Universalist congregations there are issues of language (imagine that?!).  Words like prayer, worship, god, and church are hot-button words in UU circles.  So what can I say, and how do I begin to articulate my faith, to those in my community whose language of reverence is so different from my own?  Come and find out!

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

Sept. 23, 2007- To seek congregational approval of expenditures for further renovations of Summit’s facilities. We have almost completed phase one of the Salon remodel, possible due to the generosity of the Spirit Level Foundation.  Come hear about plans for additional facility improvements made possible through this grant (in the Salon as well as the Sanctuary), and an update on the status of our Capital Campaign.  A vote will be taken to authorize spending the rest of the Spirit Level Grant, along with matching funds from our Capital bank account.

From the Minister's Mailbox - Rev. Kathleen A. Green

Dear Ones,
The start of a new and exciting church year is upon us!   With new beginnings come changes.  My family and I have certainly had changes in our lives recently, as perhaps some of you have had as well.  Some of the changes going on at Summit began before my arrival, like moving into the new facility, your interim minister leaving, and the Salon renovations starting.  More changes are sure to come as some visitors decide to call Summit their spiritual home and our membership grows.  Some changes will happen naturally and without much fanfare, while other changes will be more intentional and take place with great planning, care, and conversations.  Let’s face it, change can be disconcerting, uncomfortable, and stressful!  But change can also be exhilarating, motivating, and necessary.  After all, life is about growth and growth is change.  I am looking forward to facing the challenges of change with you and working together to see that the Summit community is nourished and strengthened along the way.
Speaking of changes, I want to let you know of one we will be trying in our Sunday Service. Starting on Sept. 2, we will begin our Joys & Concerns with silence as reflection.  I am fond of the definition of reflection as careful thought.  Sharing our most pressing concerns and joyous occasions is a sacred time that deserves careful thought. Joys & Concerns is not intended as a political platform, announcement venue, or weekend update. It is about the milestones of our lives that we feel called to share with our spiritual community.  Reflecting on what we would share and what others share will lift up the sacred nature of this unique practice and strengthen our bonds of fellowship. A cordless microphone will be available for those who wish to share, so no one need leave their seat.  In turn I will light a candle for each joy and concern spoken. It is a blessing to be a part of this ritual.
I hope to see many of you at our Ministerial Start-Up gathering on Fri., Sept. 14 (read more about this in our President’s column), and of course on Sunday mornings!
Yours for the good cause,
Rev. Kathleen
P.S.  Please note my office hours listed in the newsletter and know that I will be out of the office, attending the district minister’s retreat, Sept. 17-19.

Religious Exploration for Children and Youth at Summit
A GREAT NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS SEPTEMBER 16: Families will receive a letter in the mail with registration and program information. We are excited to be incorporating some new curricula and practices and are especially excited to welcome Rev. Kathleen, Mitchell and Adam Green into our community.

FOOSBALL AT SUMMIT! We’re still working on the outdoor play space challenge, but in the meantime we now have an indoor energy outlet (for the child in all of us). The new foosball table is in the R.E. activity area. Thanks to Ben Bernstein for the idea and research; Laurel Bernstein for surveying foosball tables all over San Diego and procuring this one from Craig’s List; Bill Stanhope, Miles and Michelle Beauchamp, and Laurel for transporting the table from Rancho Bernardo to Summit; Joe Braunwarth for guiding the assembly of the table; and to all who provided, sold and bought goodies at the bake sales at Summit’s concerts, the proceeds from which went for this purchase. Feel free to come try it out, and have a look at our “Birth of a Foosball Table” photo spread.

SEVENTH PRINCIPLE SUMMER: Our summer program concludes September 9 with a sale at refreshment time of eco-friendly crafts and foods, the proceeds going to a local environmental group to be chosen by the children.

AND SERVICE BE OUR PRAYER:
How about an intergenerational experience? Summit’s children and youth are interesting people! There are several ways you can get to know them better:

Join one of the teaching teams (pre-school & kindergarten, 1st - 2nd grade, 3rd - 5th grade, or 6th grade) and meet with that group once every 4 to 6 weeks. Plans and supplies are provided in advance.
Help as a teacher’s assistant once every 4 to 6 weeks.
Help at activity time (games, music, arts, crafts…) while adults are in the circle discussion. Bring your own ideas or join in with what’s already available.

Please continue to bring your recyclable cans and bottles and stash them in or beside the green marked container in the R.E. activity area.  If they’ve held other than water, please give them a quick rinse.

Many thanks to our August teaching volunteers: Joe Braunwarth, Mark Wheeler, Christina Shu, Doris Wascher, Alan McQuaide, Michelle Beauchamp, Marian Krauss, Miles Beauchamp and Diane Slagle.

Social Action Corner Service Is Our Prayer

Helping Others
The Social Action Committee (SAC) plans programs through which Summit can help others and bring greater justice to our world. The support SAC has received from Summitarians over the years has been tremendous.
Current SAC members include Gary and Gwen Baldwin, Laurel Bernstein, Mar Cardenas, Donna Daum, Tyra Myles, Roberta Osuyos, Lynne Slaughter, Rene Schad, Bill Stanhope, Claudette Toland, Deena Tuttle, Viraj Ward, Mark Wheeler and Vic White. Members lead and organize events or activities related to their passions, with support from others on the committee.
But wait! You may have a passion, also! If so, let’s keep it under the SAC umbrella. We’ll listen to your idea and give support if your dream seems feasible. Or, just come and support other Summitarians as they pursue their solution to creating more justice. Our next SAC meeting will be Sunday, September 9th at 8:30 am in conference room #1.

Challenge Day at Santee Schools – A big thanks to all who donated funds to support Challenge Day at three Santee schools. Over $400 was collected. Activities of this event will promote tolerance and sensitivity, both of which are strong UU values and are much needed in today’s society. Also, thank you to Lindsay Lane of Santana High for speaking about Challenge Day at our August 19th service.

How can you help Summit’s efforts in social action?
Financial: September 16 - Collection for “Helping Others Beyond Our Borders” – Esperanza School in Tijuana. Esperanza means hope. For those who live in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Tijuana where indoor plumbing and permanent flooring are luxuries, the Colegio D’Esperanza is an educational oasis providing much needed hope. For the past several years, Summit has sponsored a student to attend this private school. We will continue to pay tuition for our student, Lina Martinez.

People Power:
Challenge Day – Volunteers are still needed to help ensure the success of this event (see above.) If you are available and interested in lending a hand on September 6th, please contact Tyra Myles.

AIDS WALK San Diego is coming up! For the sixth year in a row, Summitarians will "walk our talk" by participating in AIDS Walk San Diego. Please come walk with us in Balboa Park on Sunday, September 30 at 8 am. Or, if you can't stand to miss the service, you can make a financial donation to our team instead! Please contact Laurel Bernstein for details or visit the AWSD web site at www.aidswalksd.org to register or donate under our team name - "Unitarian Universalists of San Diego County.” Thank you.

The next meeting of Amnesty International is on Monday, September 24 at 7:00 pm. Contact Viraj Ward if you have further questions.

FYI: California Coastal Clean Day, September 15, 2007, 9am – noon. Join over 5,000 volunteers at more than 60 sites around San Diego County to pick up debris and be part of the solution to marine pollution. For more information, go to http://www.cleanupday.org/.

Within the Congregation

Pat Summers is feeling like she has a new lease on life these days.  The treatments for the pain in her back are working wonderfully and she has decided to put retirement on hold.

Gloria Gelineau’s medical reports have come in with good news!

John McQuaide holds the championship for California and Nevada in the 500 meter velodrome (cycling) track in the Men 60-64 Division.  Congrats, John!  He goes on to the national competition next month.

These days Jai Ghorpade is recovering from knee replacement surgery.  Hang in there Jai.

Carol Rawlins has had some sudden health challenges, one of which is temporal arteritis, affecting her vision.

And a note from Harriet Wright:
Dear Friends,
I appreciate all of the love and concern you have shown me during the last few months of my recovery.  I would like to stay in touch with every single one of you, but as of this time my energy level is at a minimum and I am not able to do so.  I am feeling and moving around better, though it’s a slow process.  I hope to make it to Summit soon.  Please hold off on phone calls and visits for now.  Cards, letters, and email would be great!
        Lovingly, Harriet

Please remember everyone in your thoughts and prayers.

Artist’s Reception - The Circus Painter

A memorial exhibition of the works of Maus Palmer will go on display at Summit Fellowship this month. The show will open Saturday, September 8th, with a reception from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., hosted by the painter’s daughter Juana Page.
Maus and his wife Mary, a long time U.U., would yearly do the family trek to the Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was a contemporary and friend of the well known western painter, Olaf Weighorst and was commissioned to paint Olaf’s portrait for his biography. Other commissioned works were historical murals in a new bank in down town San Diego, and circus murals for a circus cafe in Paris.
The exhibition may be viewed after any 10:00 o’clock Sunday service or by appointment. Call Juana Page at 619/490-9476 for private showings.

From the President’s Desktop- Debbie Wingard

What an active summer at Summit!  (And I thought summers were slow.)  Through the generosity of the Spirit Level Foundation, we are completing phase one of the Salon remodel and it should be ready for use by the end of August.  This will provide Summit a social hall, additional space for Sunday RE programming, a meeting space for larger committees, and untold additional congregational and community activities.
With the help of Jack Shu, the Board has adopted interim guidelines on facility use for such non-congregational activities.  These guidelines include security and safety issues, and a fee structure.  For those who are not aware, there are already three groups using our facilities on a regular basis:  Amnesty International, PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and a contra dance group (a type of folk dance).  We will be refining these guidelines over the next month and hope to have a final version available by the end of September.
We have also been blessed by the generosity of the PSWD Chalice Lighters.  On Sunday, August 19, we received a check for $15,500 to help with the expansion of our Children’s RE program.  This grant will allow us to increase the time of our DRE, Connie Henry, as well as create an outdoor play area for our children.  This great organization is composed of members from throughout the PSWD (Pacific Southwest District) who agree to donate $20 or more to each of three projects per year.  In this manner, district congregations help one another grow.  Please consider joining if you are not already a member!
The Reverend Kathleen only officially began her duties on August 15th.   She has spent the last month learning about our congregation, including our needs, challenges and aspirations.  During that time, I have had the good fortune to be able to meet with her on a weekly basis.  I have found Rev. Kathleen to be insightful, knowledgeable, and genuine.  We are truly blessed to have such a caring partner for our congregation.

Board of Director Meetings

The Summit Board usually meets on the third Thursday of every month.  Visitors are welcome to come and observe, and the agenda will be posted on the web-based calendar by Monday the week of the meeting for your convenience.  If you have a topic you would like to present to the Board, please contact Debbie Wingard, President, by Monday, the second week of the month, PRIOR to the Board meeting in order to be considered for the agenda.

Ministerial Start Up Weekend:  Save the Date!

Friday, Sept. 14, 7-9 pm:  All Congregation Meeting in the Sanctuary
Ken Brown, District Executive of the UUA Pacific Southwest District, will be helping facilitate our Ministerial Start Up weekend September 14/15.  This is an opportunity to discuss our expectations and hopes for the coming year, especially as it relates to our new minister and congregational ministry.  More long-term goals for the fellowship will also be shared.  Come with your ideas and let’s talk!  (Childcare will be provided on Friday night: please RSVP to Connie Henry for planning purposes.)

Saturday, Sept. 15, 9-4 Board and Staff Retreat in the Salon

Freethinkers
September 4, 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary - Don’t miss Summit Freethinker Seminar on Freethinker Belief Systems.
The goal is to examine objectively some of the beliefs systems associated with Freethinkers over the years (e.g. atheism, agnosticism, skepticism, humanism) to see whether these belief systems have any practical value in today’s society: Can they serve as a basis for public policy? For the development of a superior moral/ethical code? For making the trains run on time? For solving complex social problems, e.g. assisted suicide, abortion rights? Provide comfort to those suffering emotionally? The speakers are: Atheist (Richard Wilkie), agnostic (Diane Slagle), skeptic (Mark Wheeler), affirmative (Carol Rawlins), and humanist (Charles Jacobson). This ought to be an interesting meeting and you are strongly urged to attend. For information on Freethinkers activities, please call Wendell or Carol Rawlins, 619- 644-1963.

MONEY MATTERS
We ended our fiscal year, June 30, 2007, with a deficit of approximately $12,000. This was due mainly to our many unusual expenses, such as our move, the dedication of our new building and the search for a settled minister.  A few outstanding payments may lower this deficit, which was covered by our reserve funds.
At present we are experiencing a poor cash flow.  We expected $15,083 in pledges during the month of July but received just $9,772. Please, if possible, let’s all catch up on our pledges.

Expected (pledged) July 07      Received July 07           Plate                                                  $833                           $558
Annual Pledges                            $15,083                         $9,772

From the Office Administrator . . .

Now that we are launching into a new church year, I’d like to toss out to everyone a few reminders.
If you need to come to the office to speak with me or with Rev. Kathleen, please call ahead to be sure we are here and available.  If it is at all possible making an appointment ahead of time would be best.
We are implementing a new system to keep track of all our exciting programs, events and meetings. There are 3 large calendar sheets on bulletin boards in the hall next to conference room #1. Committee chairs need to contact me with meeting times and all events your committees will be doing.  I will be the only one adding or deleting things on the calendar.
I hope everyone had a great summer!  We are ready to begin an exciting year on a new path!  Stop by the office the get a peak at some of our up-and-coming events.
