June 2007

Sunday Services - 10:00 a.m.

June 3:     Pursuing Trust in a World of Mistrust        Rev. Tom Owen-Towle
One could rightly conclude that there are essentially two core emotions: fear and trust, and, moreover, that we can choose which emotion will predominate in any given moment. Our every choice determines the spiritual tenor of our very lives.  Julia Shu and Marissa Henry will provide our worship music.

June 10:     A Passionate Call to UU Evangelism          Rev. Tom Owen-Towle
Our liberal religious gospel is a hopeful, life-affirming one–too valuable to hide under a bushel. How can we claim, then spread, our singular version of good news?  Connie Henry will lead a special Bridging Ceremony for our youth graduates, and Susan Simpson will be our accompanist.

June 17:     Difficult Parenting Truths        Rev. Tom Owen-Towle
On Father’s Day, I will tackle some of the thorny dilemmas found in one of life’s trickiest vocations: being a good-enough parent. This is the Sunday for our monthly Social Action offering, and we will also be joined by our Summit Singers.

June 24:     Why the Buddha Smiles         Carol Rawlins
While our interim minister, along with four Summitarian leaders, are attending the annual UUA General Assembly in Portland, Carol Rawlins, member of our Program/Worship Committee, will conduct the service, and Elaine and Richard will bring the music.

July 1:     Farewell Sunday!         Rev. Tom Owen-Towle
On Reverend Tom’s last Sunday, we will enjoy a festive brunch as well as share mutual messages of affection and gratitude. Our Summit Brass Trio will be present to blow their horns!

LOOKING BACK: May Highlights among our different groups included a rousing drum circle; wonderings about the moon and stars; considering differences and common ground; wrestling with moral dilemmas; and learning about Unitarians Frank Lloyd Wright (architect), Julia Ward Howe (writer and peace activist), Maria Mitchell (astronomer), and Daniel Chester French (sculptor).

LOOKING AHEAD: From July 8 through September 2, we will be immersed in “Seventh Principle Summer.” To borrow from the children’s version of the seven principles: We care for our planet Earth. Our varied projects will be hands-on, multi-age, meaningful and FUN. Please consider lending a hand one Sunday. You can talk with me about the different activities and which might best suit you. We have a wonderful conglomeration of bright, kind, funny, curious, able children at Summit and the more connections we forge among and between our youngers and our elders, the stronger our community can become.

SUMMIT CHILDREN’S CHOIR: Thanks to all of the children who participated in the Mothers Day performance of “In My Mother’s House.” Further thanks to Neal Biggart for her wonderful work with them  and to Elaine Harper and Richard Wilkie for their delightful accompaniment. Our children’s choir will resume in the fall.

AND SERVICE BE OUR PRAYER:
Many thanks to our May teaching volunteers: Erica Braymen, Mark Bryning, Pat Gille, Jack Shu, Michelle Beauchamp, Mark Wheeler, Gwen Curry, Stacey Scott, Glenn Sasaki, Ed Henry, Pam Kerr, Russ Chapman, Misha Chapman, Ann Olson, Mark Weedman, Lulu Lacono, Diane Slagle, Jack Slagle, Chris Steussy, Barbara Sorensen, Elizabeth Braymen, Mary Ellen Shu and Leslie Robard.
Check your summer calendar and choose a Sunday to help out in R.E. You’ll be able to actively, responsibly, and painlessly honor the earth - with great odds of having a good time.
Recycling: Please continue to bring your recyclable cans and plastic bottles and stash them in or beside the green marked container in the R.E. activity area.

Our Own Summitarian Angels
Kudos to a few of our Summitarians who have contributed their efforts to good causes: Misha Chapman for her personal efforts to support Crisis House, Laurel Bernstein for her help in rebuilding a Katrina-destroyed home in Biloxi, Donna Baum for teaching English to Kurds in East County and last, but certainly not least, Mar Cardenas for her role in organizing the Harmony Run at Prospect Avenue School in Santee.

Helping Others In East County
Crisis House – Our May 20 canned and dry food collection for Crisis House’s food bank was a great success. Thanks to all who donated and a special thanks to our kids for helping with the collection. For a complete list of Crisis House services, please go to http://www.crisishouse.org/.

How can you help Summit’s efforts in social action?
Financial:
Our Social Action Sunday collection on June 17 will support Survivors of Torture, International, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for survivors of politically motivated torture and their families who live in San Diego County. Their mission is to be a healing resource for survivors of torture, to raise awareness among the general public on the issue of torture and to be an instrument to end torture.

People Power:
Amnesty International –The film, Road to Guantanamo, the true story of three British-born South Asians all around 20, who, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, find themselves taken to the U.S. prison camp on Guantánamo base where they are tortured before being released after two years of captivity will be reviewed at the next Amnesty International meeting on Tuesday, June 26 at 6:00 pm. Contact Viraj Ward if you have any questions.

    Ministerial Musings  Rev. Tom Owen-Towle
The job I set out to do two years ago will conclude on Sunday, July 1st: namely, creating the conditions under which your next settled ministry might flourish. I’ve tried to leave the cupboard full with respect to vital worship, strong lay leadership, sound fiscal conditions, and an expansive consciousness of our calling as liberal religionists in today’s world.
I can’t hide my enthusiasm with the choice of Kathleen Green as your ministerial companion. And I’m delighted with her husband, Mitchell, and son, Adam, as well. They are a strong and vibrant Unitarian Universalist family.
Kathleen may be new to ministry, but she embodies a wise soul. I intuit her to be a fine pastor by temperament and skill. She’s going to be a minister who wears well, both personally and professionally. Kathleen is gentle and approachable but harbors spine and won’t be deterred from her mission. There aren’t guarantees in either life or ministry, but my measured hunch is that your pastoral match will be mutually nourishing over the long haul. I deem you both blessed.
But I’d be amiss if, as a gnarled veteran of 40+ years in this craft, I didn’t offer a couple pieces of counsel for your discernment.
First and foremost, be good to one another. Simply dare to bring your best (not perfect) selves to every encounter you share and every project you undertake as partisan Summitarians.
Clearly, both sides, despite your unanimous vote (a rare achievement), will fall short of bliss, but I urge you, the in-resident stakeholders of SUUF–to take a vow, in the privacy of your own souls, before the Greens arrive in mid-August. I charge you to pledge “right relationship” in all your Fellowship dealings. And I’m confident that Kathleen and her clan will match your promise with their own.
Second, I urge you to allow Kathleen truly to minister to you (remember that’s her job, nothing less and nothing more). Allow her to minister to you both individually and institutionally, in fair and foul weather. Give her the chance to speak her truths in love, to stretch and be stretched by you. Do not be deterred from your mission of forging sincere bonds of mutual trust.
When you’re sick, don’t keep Reverend Kathleen at arm’s length. When you’re angry, have the guts to engage her. And, for everybody’s sake, don’t pout unduly over Fellowship stuff. Whine quietly or yelp a bit, then move ahead. Life’s too short, and Summit’s too precious to carry resentments or harbor grudges.
Kathleen’s a high energy, fully accountable kind of minister. Count on her being present for and with you. Count on her to both challenge and comfort you. All I’m asking is that you match her presence with your own.
And, remember, that you and she don’t have to agree upon all matters theological, liturgical, or social. It’s far more interesting if you don’t. In truth, you only have to agree upon one thing: to grow a Beloved Community in East County.
Some wit once remarked that “our liberal faith is too important to be left in the hands of the laity.” Another person countered with “our religion is too important to be left in the hands of the clergy.” Friends, don’t succumb to either of those simplistic, cynical, viewpoints. Instead, heed the necessary, third option: “Our progressive faith is simply too important to be left and will always require the creative, compassionate, and collaborative gifts of both pulpit and pew.” Never doubt that the most resourceful ministry is always shared, completely shared.
It may help to think of your common mission in terms of the sentiments of the late poet Raymond Carver: “And did you get what you wanted from this life?” “I did.” “And what did you want?” “To call myself beloved, to be myself beloved on this earth.”
If we can do that, if we can grow moments of belovedness in our personal, familial, congregational, and global lives, then we can go to our graves with satisfaction and serenity.
So, here’s my measured hope: if you stay on purpose, if you stay awake, and if you stay kind…together you and the Greens will grow a flagship congregation that will reform society and transform souls.
I will be watching and cheering all of you on. For I’m no impartial observer. I’m invested in your tomorrows; you’ll always hold a cherished spot in my history and my heart.
     In faith, hope, and love…Tom

Please remember to send healing thoughts for  Jai  and Suzanne Ghorpade as they both continue to recover.

Lee Makeever has just returned from Illinois where her former UU church invited her to come back so they could honor her for all her service on their Ministerial Search Committee.  This was the 10 Year Anniversary for the minister they called. Congratulations, Lee!

Our snow birds, Fred and Gloria Gelineau, are migrating back to the east coast. Let us keep them in our hearts, as well as other members of Summit’s sojourneying flock!  Happy trails!

Janet Dixon and Mary Dryden could use a couple of helpers on a regular basis make coffee on Sundays. If you are looking for a way to support Summit’s endeavors, this could be your chance! Please contact Janet  to let her know you can help.

From the Caring Committee…
Summit’s Caring Committee is responsible for providing transportation for those members who are unable to drive and need help getting to our Sunday service, meetings or medical appointments. At present, the need is modest, so volunteers should not be overtaxed.
If you are willing and able to help occasionally, please let us know.  We’ll try very hard to make it convenient for you.  Please contact Rod Orth.

Flowers for Sunday Services
The flowers at our Sunday services always add a soft spirit to the room.  If you would be interested in commemorating a personal special occasion or honoring a loved one by providing a flower arrangement for a particular Sunday, contact Barbara Jania-Smith. You and your occasion will be mentioned in that Sunday’s order of service.       Thank you!

Within the Congregation From Our Secretary...
A productive and meaningful meeting was held on May17, with at least 5 guests in attendance.  In summary the following was accomplished:
1.)  Several guests & Mark Wheeler from the Summit Teen Group presented their thoughts about becoming actual members of the Summit congregation.  Some indicated they wanted to sign the membership book and contribute financially, at least a minimum to cover the dues Summit pays to the UUA for each member. Under the present Bylaws they may sign the membership book & will be given the opportunity to do so. Any further changes to our bylaws to clarify their status are under advisement by the Board.
2.)  To pay the delegate registration fee to the General Assemble in June for Debbie Wingard; Ed Henry and Connie Henry.  It was noted that Marissa Henry would attend representing the Young Adults.
3.)   Minister, Tom Owen-Towle is donating ten (10) of his books to the Summit Library.
4.)   Moved to form a Bylaws Committee  naming Ellen Gifford, Chair.
5.)   Voted to present the proposed Fiscal Budget to the congregation at Annual Meeting.
6.)   Voted to present the proposed Slate of Officers/Directors/Nominating Committee to the congregation at Annual Meeting.

Why the Buddha Smiles  June 24 Carol Rawlins
While our interim minister, along with four Summitarian leaders, are attending the annual UUA General Assembly in Portland, Carol Rawlins, member of our Program/Worship Committee, will conduct the service, and Elaine and Richard will bring the music.

From Rev. Kathleen Green . . .
Dear Summitarians,
My time in the Chicago area is drawing to a close and I am happy to tell you that Mitchell, Adam, Lucy (our canine child you have yet to meet), and I have found a home in El Cajon.  We will begin our cross country adventure on July 1, stopping to see family along the way.  Once we arrive and settle in, I’ll be happy to share our new address and phone number with you.  My official duties at Summit do not begin until August 15, but you will likely see me around, here and there, before then!  Please know that you are always welcome to e-mail me during this transition time at minister@lcuuc.org.
I will be meeting with Ed, Connie, and Marissa Henry, and Debbie Wingard, at the GA in Portland.  What an exciting gathering it will be and how blessed I will feel to wear a name badge that reads:  Rev. Kathleen A. Green – Summit UU Fellowship/ Santee, CA!  I have always enjoyed our General Assembly gatherings, but this one will have special meaning for me as I sit on the stage during The Service of the Living Tradition to formally receive preliminary fellowship from the UUA.  I will also be attending worship services, workshops, and lectures with a new frame of mind – that of Summit’s settled minister.
Keep up the incredible work that is Summit’s ministry and I’ll keep all of you in my heart as I cross the country (with a few pit stops and detours along the way) to be with you.
Soon to be on the road,
      Rev. Kathleen

Theater tickets to “All Shook Up!” brought in $860 for Summit.  Thank you, Vic White, for organizing this fundraiser.
Our special collection in April raised $611 for Crisis House and was held in honor of Dorothy Greene who has spent many years working for Social Responsibility. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Ever Wanted to Show Your Gratitude?
Have you ever had someone help you out, offered them a couple of bucks for their trouble, only to have them decline?  Well, if that happens, consider making a Service Donation to Summit in the helper’s name.  Summitarians have been doing this for years but not many of the newcomers have heard about it.  You can donate at the service or drop it in the mail to the Summit office, 8778 Cottonwood Ave., Santee, CA 92071.

Sunday Morning  Meditation
We will have a meditation/prayer session from 8 – 9 a.m. each Sunday morning before the service begins.

Membership News May 2007

We welcome with heartfelt warmth to our beloved Fellowship in May, the following three new members: Joanna Jones, Mar Cardenas and Shelley Lekven.  They have many special interests and talents which we hope they will share with us.  Members and friends, please welcome them and their families.

We wish to thank all those who turned out for photos with Lifetouch. The company was very impressed with 93 units of members and friends participating in three days of photography.  As such, we have earned points for 6 activity pages to be included in our pictorial directory.  For those who were unable to attend these sessions, it is possible to still be included in the directory. Hal Summers, our wonderful photographer on site, can arrange to photograph you and that photo can be submitted. A check made out to Lifetouch for $10 needs to accompany the photo and Lifetouch must receive them before June 5.  Please see Joan about the details. Also, any changes in your personal information must be received by the Summit office by June 5, to make it into the directory; 619-562-0833/summitunitarian@ sbcglobal.net.

Directory Band Aid  Please update your directory with the following information.  This will cut down on calls to the office.   Thank you.

Kay Anderson has moved to Mexico but will be with us from time to time.  Her new info is in the online member directory.

Presidential Ponderings      Rex Graham
After serving one year as president, I’ve decided not to serve a second year in the post, which is the maximum tenure for a president permitted by our bylaws. In fiscal year 2007-08, my fourth and final year on the board, I will serve on the board as immediate past president. Several Summit leaders have suggested that our bylaws be updated to urge all presidents to serve one year as immediate past president. I would agree with that position, because it would help ensure continuity.
The Nominating Committee has recommended Debbie Wingard as our next president and Joe Braunwarth as vice president. I would unequivocally support and recommend Debbie and Joe. Both of them have smarts, sensitivity and soul, and we are blessed to have their commitment to Summit. The entire Board is up for election, as are three of the five members of the Nominating Committee. The congregation will vote at the June 3 congregational meeting or by absentee ballot on the board and Nominating Committee candidates. There will also be a vote on next year’s budget.
On July 1, Debbie and I will celebrate Rev. Tom Owen-Towle’s final Sunday service in his two-year interim ministry. Please join us for a potluck that day. The entire farewell is being organized by Toni Rogers. Rev. Kathleen Green will join us officially on Aug. 15 and Rev. Frank Placone-Willey will provide emergency ministerial services after Tom departs and before Kathleen arrives.
Even as we look forward to Rev. Kathleen’s arrival, we will miss Tom deeply when he leaves Summit for another interim ministry. He helped many of us grow. He certainly helped me; I learned from his incredible examples of charity, love and wisdom.
I also love Tom’s sermons and his magic tricks. One of his recent sermons on how love can build a bridge, he said that our religion must flow through the heart, and ultimately be translated through our hands. Our hands are called upon to embody our religion. I believe that Tom has been so successful over his 40-year career as a UU minister because he is a thoughtful doer. And, as we know, action has magic in it.

 Summit

Aesthetics Committee Report  -  " Wish List "
Summit has many volunteer opportunities to improve the aesthetics of our various spaces.  To that end, the committee has created a "Wish List".  If you would like to help out in our beautification efforts, (even if you don't know what you can do) we have many ideas and needs!  Kudos to Marian Krauss' sewing talents in creating the brown table skirts for our greeting room.  Many thanks also to Barbara Orth for her generous contributions including her lovely flower arrangements.  We hope Barbara and Marian are the first of many to contribute funding and/or talents to our endeavors. Office & Conference Room Current Featured Art was created by Charles Ernest Gifford , Ellen Gifford's husband, Project Engineer of Nuclear Power and the Moon Shoot, also enjoyed painting and copper sculpture.  His paintings are currently hanging in our office and conference room.  Of special interest is the painting of the UU Conference Center at Star Island off the coast of New Hampshire.  Thank you , Ellen, for sharing these with us.
Gwen Curry (chair), Loretta Godfrey, Alix Hart, Suzanne McQuaide, Pat Metzgar, Jenny Saar, and Carolyn Owen-Towle

Social Action Committee Meeting – Our next meeting will Sunday, June 10 at 8:30 am in the conference room. Newcomers are always more than welcome! Notice this meeting will be on the 2nd Sunday of the month and not the usual 3rd Sunday.

Book Signing
Summitarians have been asking if some of my books would be obtainable before my final Sunday on July 1st. I’m pleased to say that, with the Board’s approval, we’ve worked out a simple plan.
First off, I’m donating a copy of a dozen or so of my titles (you already have a few) to your fine John Carey Library, overseen by Gini Schmitz.
Second, following the worship services on June 3rd and 10th, copies of my books on topics ranging from God to love, joy to spiritual renewal, partnership to men’s growth will be available for purchase. A fellow Summitarian will staff the table, and I will personally sign copies, if desired. Half of the proceeds (checks made out to Summit) will go to purchase new volumes on Unitarian Universalist history and thought for the aforementioned library.
This opportunity will enhance Summit’s library collection as well as enable each of you to take a piece of me with you upon my departure.
     Tom Owen-Towle, interim minister
